Abstract
The phenomenon of begging is one of the most dangerous social phenomena that societies suffer from, whether they are advanced or backward. It is a phenomenon that threatens the social security of society. Therefore, the study came under the title of a geographical analysis of the phenomenon of begging in the city of Samawah. The aim of the study was to identify the size of the phenomenon of begging in the city of Samawah and its spatial variation between the city’s districts, as well as to identify the demographic characteristics represented by the age and gender composition of the beggars. In addition, to identify the social and economic characteristics of the beggars through a research sample that included (80) questionnaires. The study reached several results, the most important of which are: that the beggars who practice the phenomenon of begging in the city of Samawah are concentrated in the central commercial area at a rate of (35) of the total sample, and that one of the most important social reasons that characterize the beggars is the death of one or both parents, as they constituted a rate of (33.7%). The study showed that a rate of (56.36) of the beggars included in the sample suffer from poverty, which is considered one of the most important economic reasons in the study area. The study also proved that (72.5) percent of the beggars included in the sample had low educational levels (illiterates).
