Abstract

Aquaculture is the breeding of various types of fish, both saltwater and freshwater, for human consumption under controlled conditions and within designated areas, whether in ponds or cages, with the aim of developing production and establishing farm ownership of the products. The aquatic resources allocated for fish farming in Iraq amounted to 300 hectares, and fish farming methods in fish farms varied into three types: mud ponds, floating cages, and the closed reciprocating system. The total fish production from these systems amounted to 808,604 tons in 2014. Floating cages had the largest share, representing 85.46% of the total fish farm production. The closed reciprocating system came in last, representing 13.3%, and finally, mud ponds, representing 1.396 tons. This exceeds the river and marine fish production, which amounted to 115,115 tons in 2014, because Iraq possesses the appropriate environmental conditions for fish farming using modern, intensive, and economical methods that are characterized by controlling the environmental conditions of fish farming, which achieves high productivity per unit area and economical use of land and water.
