Abstract

The early grammarians exerted extensive effort after establishing the rules of Arabic grammar, as they began to extrapolate the language from its primary sources: the Holy Quran and its recitations, poetry, the speech of eloquent Arabs, and proverbs. In their extrapolation, they sought correctness, precision, and comprehensiveness. The grammatical evidence they took to strengthen a grammatical rule, establish a rule they derived, or a linguistic ruling they arrived at. Ibn Malik’s Alfiyyah is one of the grammatical systems that scholars and students have eagerly memorized, studied, and explained for several centuries. Its popularity has led to a clear abundance of commentaries, the likes of which have never been known in the explanation of grammatical systems. Among those commentaries is Ibn Aqil’s commentary on Ibn Malik’s Alfiyyah, which is considered an important work among the works of grammarians and linguists, scholars, and students.
