Abstract
The impact of the Arabic language - with its grammar and eloquence - on understanding the Holy Qur’an is not hidden. Indeed, scholars have made knowledge of the Arabic language one of the most important conditions required for anyone who wants to interpret the Qur’an and derive rulings from it. Among the topics of Arabic science is the topic of the meanings of letters or the letters of meanings. Al-Zarkashi (d. 794 AH) said: “The search for the meanings of letters is what the interpreter needs because of the difference in their meanings.” (1) Al-Suyuti (d. 911 AH) mentioned these letters under the title “The Tools Needed by the Interpreter,” saying: “I mean that knowing this is one of the tasks required because of the difference in their locations, and for this reason speech and deduction differ according to them.” (2) Among the most extensive of these letters in terms of the multiplicity of their meanings are the prepositions, as the meanings of these letters affect the interpretation of the Qur’anic text from different aspects. Most interpreters have pointed this out, as the interpreters’ disagreement in determining the meanings of the prepositions leads to their disagreement in interpreting the Qur’anic text. If the Qur’anic text includes legal rulings, this leads to their disagreement in explaining those rulings.
