Abstract

Iran witnessed significant internal political developments in the mid-1950s that nearly toppled the country's political system. This prompted Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi to seek security assistance from various international powers to establish a strong security apparatus capable of suppressing political opposition within Iran. Consequently, and in cooperation with the intelligence agencies of influential countries such as the United States, Britain, and Israel, the Shah succeeded in 1957 in establishing a security organization called SAVAK (the Intelligence and Security Organization of the Iranian State) to ruthlessly suppress his opponents. He appointed a military figure, Taymour Bakhtiar, who had a distinguished record of suppressing political dissidents, to head this organization. This study focuses on the role of Taymour Bakhtiar within SAVAK.
