Abstract
Human beings are complex creatures, teeming with countless contrasts—visible and hidden, conscious and unconscious—at the physiological, mental, rhetorical, and behavioral levels. Al-Jahiz recognized this fundamental human truth, as well as the fact that the universe is a vast realm of both apparent and hidden contrasts. Through the persuasive and didactic rhetoric of his writings, he sought to analyze these contrasting actions, behaviors, and perspectives, presenting them in a compelling and accessible style to his audience, aiming to enlighten and influence them. Contrasting elements are among the most effective rhetorical devices, lending his writings both persuasive power and moral value, since human thought, in general, cannot be understood, grasped, or interpreted in isolation from the concept of contrast, or the dialogue between opposing or contrasting ideas. This research will explore this concept, considering contrast as a broad interpretive and analytical tool, aiming to clarify the rhetorical strategy of his writings and delve into their structure, thus achieving a clear and accessible understanding.
