الرواية والثقافة: أثر الثقافة المعاصرة على روايات علي بدر
Abstract
This research offers a cultural analysis of two novels by the Iraqi novelist Ali Bader. It examines the influence of contemporary culture on the creation of these texts, and explores the role of the intellectual in producing a new culture for society. This new culture transcends the fragmented popular cultures that reflect the emergent intellectual, social, and cultural transformations within societies, cultures that do not represent an authentic cultural identity. The intellectual, in this context, creates culture, rather than merely reproducing or repeating it. The two novels, "The Tobacco Guard" and "Papa Sartre," are analyzed to reveal the direct impact of contemporary culture on literary creation. This includes the use of popular history—the history of ordinary people—as a direct source in the writing, without fictionalizing historical events; the exploration of contemporary cultural issues in constructing the self-narrative; the examination of the influence of contemporary culture on the portrayal of the character's identity; and the identification of manifestations of popular culture within the text, from colloquial language to the descriptive style used for names, events, and ideas.
