لواء المنتفك في الوثائق العثمانية: تقاويم البصرة نموذجاً 1890-1900
Abstract
Ottoman almanacs are an important source for the history of Ottoman provinces, including Basra in the 19th century. The Basra almanacs provide geographical, demographic, infrastructural, and economic descriptions of the various districts within the province, including the Muntfiq district, which is the focus of this study. Historical accounts of this district are scarce, so the researcher supplemented the almanac data with other sources, leading to findings that contradict the prevailing views among historians regarding the name of the Muntfiq Emirate, its original location, and the origins of the Muntfiq confederation. The research also examines the administrative structure of the district and its sub-districts of Shatra, Suq al-Shuyukh, and al-Hay, as described in the almanacs. Furthermore, the almanacs offer information on agriculture and livestock in the district. Therefore, the administrative details and general description of the Muntfiq district are not readily found in other historical sources.
