Abstract

The concept of the human self has been extensively explored in psychological, social, and philosophical fields, due to its significance in an individual's life. A review of the literature on the self reveals that the self constitutes a central dimension of personality, and its primary function is to strive for the integration and coherence of the personality, enabling the individual to adapt to their environment and develop a unique identity that distinguishes them from others. Our study of Nazik al-Malak's poetry aims to shed light on an important aspect of her work, considering her style as classically formal yet romantically expressive. She employed a form of passive resistance and protest through rejection, as the self yearns for an ideal that reality lacks, thus creating a profound paradox. Her poetry thus becomes a vivid portrayal of the psychological struggles stemming from internal conflicts; a result of the incompatibility between socially accepted norms and the individual's psychological perception of outdated values that the self cannot reconcile with. Furthermore, the theme of death and its meaning, and the attitude towards it, is not merely a product of 20th-century circumstances, though important, reflecting the impact of modern life and societal consciousness on literature in general, and poetry in particular, shaping perspectives on life, destiny, existence, and the consequences of fear and pessimism, ultimately leading to either resignation or defiance.
