Abstract
This study focused on the spatial distribution and functional efficiency of religious services in the city of Basra. Religious services encompassed a range of institutions, including mosques, grand mosques, Shia religious centers, churches, and cemeteries. These institutions have existed since the city's founding, as they have always been an integral part of the community. Basra contained 302 religious institutions; however, their number and the area they occupy were not systematically planned or distributed across the city's various districts. These included 278 mosques (including grand mosques, regular mosques, and Shia religious centers), 15 churches, and 9 cemeteries. The total area occupied by these institutions was 318,126 square meters (3.4 million square feet), representing 0.33% of the city's built-up area, which is 96,339,818 square meters. The total population using these places of worship was 324,533, representing 29% of the city's total population of 1,111,223 in 2012.
