Abstract

It would not be an exaggeration to say that metaphor is one of the most precise and eloquent rhetorical devices, possessing the greatest impact and the most beautiful imagery, and conveying meaning most completely. (1) The metaphorical image may resemble the image in a simile, in that it establishes a shared meaning between two things, but the metaphor is based on figurative language, using words in a non-literal sense, which requires careful selection of meaning and appropriate wording for the new connotations, especially in important rhetorical contexts. Metaphor, unlike simile, does not explicitly state the shared characteristic. When used judiciously in texts, metaphor clarifies ideas and provides a vividness of imagery that surpasses that of similes. The reader feels that the meaning is powerfully and vividly portrayed, due to the metaphorical claim of unity between the two elements, which adds to the overall aesthetic appeal of the text. (2) This is particularly true in the prophetic narratives about the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), where the metaphorical and descriptive language used by the author imbues the noble prophetic image with renewed vitality and brings it back to life in the realm of religious guidance and spiritual enlightenment, allowing the reader to experience it anew, whether they personally knew the Prophet or not. The reader feels a unique kind of love for this figure, realizing that the religion they have learned is what inspires this love: "Is not religion itself love?"
