Abstract

Human interest in the geographical environment dates back to the very beginning of human existence on Earth. Humans began by exploring the surrounding geographical areas and understanding their characteristics; hence, it is said that humans are naturally geographers. Since ancient times, humans have continuously sought the advantages of the geographical environment. The objective of this research is to study and identify the most important natural and human factors that influenced geographical thought in ancient civilizations, and to explain the factors that contributed to enriching geographical thought through the study of natural and human environmental factors. A descriptive-analytical geographical approach was used to study the various developments and changes that accompanied the historical evolution of geography. Regarding the sources used, reliance was placed on official sources and references, as well as researchers in the field of the history of the humanities, in addition to translated Arabic references from prominent Western geographers. The research structure necessitated dividing the study into several sections. The first section addressed the development of social thought in ancient civilizations, including original and derivative civilizations. The second section focused on the growth and development of geographical thought among Arabs and Muslims. The third section dealt with the relationship between geography and the environment in all its components. The research revealed that geography, like other sciences, has undergone many changes and developments, and that scholars and thinkers have differed in their precise definitions, functions, and concepts of geography. Indeed, each group of scholars and thinkers has its own definition of geography. It also became clear that geography is distinguished by its relationship with the environment in all its aspects, including the social environment, which represents the context in which an individual develops and which shapes their personality, behaviors, attitudes, and values.
