Abstract

History deals with objective facts that can be labeled as relative, because we cannot distance the political whims and factional interests that contributed to writing history. When the art of the novel took history as a subject for narration, the first stage witnessed the dominance of the presence of the historical event at the expense of its aesthetic employment, as the novel became a template for conveying historical material. The art of the novel introduced the elements of plot and suspense into the historical material. With the development witnessed by the novel throughout its long history, the historical material was pruned and the process of its entry into the novel text became not limited to serving history alone, but rather became an artistically employed process with its connotations and precise calculations. Despite all the existing relationships between the historical event and the novel text, the imaginative element in the novel remains the most important, because it is what characterizes the literary work as artistic and provides it with the aesthetic characteristics that guarantee its existence. This is an attempt to discover the method of entering the historical material into one of the important Iraqi novels, which chose history as a subject for narration.
