Abstract
The research deals with a vital topic represented by studying the geographical potentials for investing renewable energy and choosing the most appropriate sites for the establishment of renewable energy projects in Al-Muthanna Governorate. This is because the governorate is characterized by being a suitable and appropriate environment for investing alternative energy sources for oil, exploiting them and directing them for promising development purposes in various projects. Renewable energy sources are free, inexhaustible and environmentally non-polluting. One of the most important renewable energy potentials available in Al-Muthanna Governorate is the large amounts of solar radiation that can be invested in the production of solar energy. The annual rate of direct solar radiation can reach (15.44 MJ / m2 / day), while the annual rate of total solar radiation can reach (19.81 MJ / m2 / day). The wind speed and direction are appropriate to be exploited in power generation, as the wind can produce an estimated energy of (27.65 Watt /m2/hour) as an annual rate. Solar salt ponds can also contribute to generating electricity economically in the Governorate of Muthanna, due to the availability of salt in abundant quantities, the availability of large areas and the proximity of salt sources, which reduces its economic cost. As for the energy generated from waste by recycling and safe disposal of it, it contributes to the protection of groundwater from pollution. That is, per day, approximately (305.6) tons of waste is produced (244.48) megawatts of electricity are produced per day, to be exploited to meet the governorate’s need of electricity
