المياه الجوفية في الصحراء الجنوبية للعراق واستثماراتها
Abstract
The research aims to study the groundwater in the southern desert of Iraq within the administrative borders of the governorates of Diwaniyah, Najaf, Muthanna and Basra, by demonstrating its importance and general characteristics, knowing its reservoirs, geographical distribution and investment. There are large quantities of groundwater in the region that lack proper methods of exploitation. Through studying this region, it was found that it contains a huge treasure of wasted water resources. Due to the lack of mechanisms for using and investing groundwater, which was reflected in harnessing it in the service of agriculture and development, it was found that the southern desert needs a geological survey to determine the volume of groundwater and develop plans to benefit from it. The salinity of groundwater increases with depth and towards the drainage areas, but it often ranges between fresh and slightly saline water and of different quality, including bicarbonate, chloride and sulfate water.
