Abstract

The research (torrential rains in Iraq, their causes and the possibility of investing in them) explains the main causes of torrential rains, which are heavy rainfall that lasts for a day or more, as well as the nature of the surface slope and the expansion of the valley basin area are major reasons for the occurrence of torrents. The research also focuses on how to invest torrents in dry and semi-dry areas. Through the meteorological data of rain, the days in which torrents occur for some rainy years in Iraq have been identified and the most important conclusions of the research are: The fall of rain in large quantities and in a rapid manner during one day or for several continuous days, the main reason for the occurrence of torrents. As happened for some years (2013, 2015, 2018), Wadi Houran is one of the most important valleys in the Western Plateau, with its high amount of flood water coming from the west towards the Euphrates River. The lack of great seriousness in constructing dams on valleys to reserve water, except for some very small dams on Wadi Houran and Al Ghaf. As for the most important recommendations, they are: Establishing dams on the course of the valley according to the nature of the slope by one dam per 20-30 km. And the establishment of reservoirs or artificial lakes dug in the stomachs of valley streams with a width (1 km) and a length (5 km) and take advantage of the transported dust to pave the shoulders of the valley. The research included two topics, the first one discussed the causes of torrents, and the second one discussed the possibility of investing in torrents.
