Abstract

The architecture of the Near East, especially in Mesopotamia, has a vast and long history, began with the emergence of semi-stable settlements at the end of the Epipalaeolithic period around 12,000 BC. Its remains have appeared since ancient periods, used in building various materials available in the environment of Mesopotamia. Mud form the basic material in the construction, was in various forms. Tauf was the oldest, which was used in sites such as; M"lfaat, Nemrik, Maghzaliya, Jarmo and Hassuna, and then in the sites of Halaf and Samarra culture. Stones were also used in construction, Limestone, alabaster, and others. Gypsum was one of the most widely available materials in the northern of Mesopotamia. It was used in the sites Maghzaliya, Yarim Tepe and Umm Dabaghiyah. In these sites, Kilns were used to prepare It. The bitumen was also widely available in Mesopotamia, and its remains were found in Maghzaliya, Matarra, and others. Wood was widely used in roofing in Iraqi architecture, especially in roofing. The materials above were the main building materials, often used together in the construction of a building, and participated in the development of architecture in Mesopotamia through the Periods.
