السياحة الأثرية في محافظة المثنى: المعوقات والحلول
Abstract
Among all Iraqi Governorates, Al-Muthanna Governorate has an ancient cultural heritage; for it possesses many archaeological sites scattered throughout the Governorate and dating back to ancient historical eras. For many countries, archaeological tourism is considered an important sector and a source for their revenues in addition to its role to exhibit their history and culture. Unfortunately, the tourism sector has not fulfilled its role appropriately in all Iraqi Governorates, especially in Al-Muthanna Governorate owed to political and security reasons. The period preceding 2003 witnessed wars and economic sanctions, then it was followed by political instability leading to radical changes in the whole political situation. Nevertheless, southern Governorates are somewhat stable and they could be starting points for activating archaeological sector and tourism. Al-Muthanna Governorate has more than 250 archaeological sites according to a survey conducted by Al-Muthanna Archeology Directorate stimulated by Directorate General of Archeology and Heritage in Baghdad. The most significant of those sites are Al-Warka'a city and Al-Ajiz Hill in which partial excavations have been conducted and remained unfinished so far. Other sites are mostly archaeological hills, some of which are exposed to ransacking because there is no sufficient guarding offered to them and because there is a lack in patriotism inside the plunderers.
