Abstract

Portraying meaning is of more importance than using the right words only. This is what Edgar Allan Poe (1809-1849) was very well aware of. Within the short story The Tell-Tale Heart that consists of about four pages, Poe used 489 punctuation marks, a very significant number. This paper attempts to stylistically analyze the meaning behind such punctuations, and how they represent the psychological conflict of the main character, thus using Freud’s, along with a thorough theoretical evaluation on both the linguistic and literary dimension.

Keywords

Freud, mental disorder, psychology, obsessive-compulsive disorder, punctuation, madness, Freud
